At 13, Martin began his sales journey as a debt collector for the Waikato Times, earning on commission and quickly surpassing adults twice his age.
Sales teams require clarity and most lack it. Chunking annual goals into daily and weekly activities with KPIs and a visual scorecard is essential. Elite athletes have the vision (Olympic glory) and their coach breaks it down into monthly, weekly, and daily training blocks.
Most sales teams do not follow their sales process which is why sales teams individual performance can fluctuate wildly from the process they follow to the pitch they deliver. An elite athlete does not change their process… in fact they practice it thousands of time so it is repeated without thinking.
A lack of accountability from sales leaders is a major factor in underperformance. Clear KPIs reviewed weekly and monthly are essential, as is the leader’s ability to pinpoint skill gaps. Elite sporting teams are highly scrutinised by coaches, media, and supporters — if standards drop, questions are asked.
Competition is fierce, margins are tight, and buyer behaviour is constantly evolving. Your sales process must evolve ahead of the market — what worked 12 months ago is already outdated. Constant coaching from internal or external mentors is essential. Imagine a sporting team whose tactics didn’t evolve during the season?
In sales, mindset matters most — yet it’s rarely acknowledged by leaders as important enough to address. Fear of failure, rejection, and conflict runs unchecked through most teams, resulting in excessive discounting and lost deals. Elite athletes work on their mindset; elite salespeople are no different.
